    • Frequent Asked Questions about Worker Protection Standards

      Worker Protection Standard (WPS)

      Who needs WPS training?

Anyone working to produce an agricultural commodity that enters areas within 30 days of a pesticide application. Additionally, individuals maintaining spray equipment also need training.

What is the difference between a worker and handler?

A worker is any person that performs duties directly related to the production of agricultural plants or as part of an agricultural establishment. In general, a handler is any person mixing, handling open containers, cleaning containers, maintaining spray equipment, or disposing of empty containers. For all examples of handlers, see https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-worker-safety/definition-pesticide-handler-under-worker-protection-standard

Who can be a WPS trainer?

Any person that holds a current pesticide license (any category) or who has completed the EPA-approved Train-the-Trainer program. Additionally, anyone that has been designated as a trainer by state, federal, or tribal agency.

When is posting warning signs required?

Posting is required if the Restricted-Entry Interval is greater than 48 hours and workers are expected to be within 0.25 miles of the field. For treatment of enclosed spaces, posting is required if the Restricted-Entry Interval is great than 4 hours.

Is my immediate family exempt from WPS requirements?

There are some exemptions for immediate family (as defined by WPS), such as minimum age for workers and annual WPS training requirements. However, other requirements such as maintaining the application exclusion zone and observing the Restricted-Entry Interval still applies. For a full list of immediate family requirements and exemptions, see http://pesticideresources.org/wps/guide/famexempt.html
