New Florida Termite Treatment Notice Rules

In early July, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced a set of new rules that will provide improved protection for consumers who contract with pest control companies for termite services.  All contracts issued by pest control companies for termite control must now clearly state whether the treatments cover subterranean termites, drywood termites, or both.

termitesAnother important change addresses the scope of residential termite treatment.  Homes that receive treatment in part of the structure that show termite activity (a “spot” treatment) must indicate that this was the case.  Previously, the treatment sticker did not have to specify that it was a “spot” treatment, rather than an entire house treatment.

Another big change deals with retreatment.  Now, pest control companies must retreat infestations covered by the contract within 90 to 180 days.  Previously, there was no time limit on when the retreatment had to be performed.  Companies are also now prohibited from denying retreatment or repair if they were aware of a construction defect or other condition conducive to termite infestation, such as a water leak, and did not inform the property owner and allow them to repair it.  Consumers can get more information by calling 800 HELP-FLA or logging onto www.floridatermitehelp.org.  (FDACS via UF/IFAS Pest Alert, 7/6/06).
