Pesticide Registrations and Actions
- The EPA is currently assessing the risks and benefits of several soil fumigants (methyl bromide, metam sodium, metam potassium, dazomet, and chloropicrin) as part of the reregistration program. The Biological and Economic
Analysis Division of the Agency is responsible for characterizing and, if possible, quantifying the benefits of the use of these soil fumigants in orchards and vineyards. If you or someone you knows has any information regarding the use of these pesticides in these sites, please contact Mark Mossler at the PIO. - On January 12, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) registered the biofungicide Gliocladium catenulatum strain J1446 (Prestop®) for control of diseases on food crops, turf, and ornamental plants. The EPA Reg. No. for the Verdera Oy product is 64137-11. (PREC Agenda, 2/1/07).
- The EPA has decided that the use of phosmet (Imidan®) on high bush blueberry, peach, nectarine, apple, pear, plum, grape, and apricot can be retained with higher restricted entry intervals (REIs). (EPA email, 1/19/07).
- Based on a request by IR-4, tolerances for residues of the insecticide spiromesifen (Oberon®) have been approved. Tolerances of importance to Florida include: fruiting vegetables and oat. (Federal Register, 1/24/07).
- Both Monsanto and Syngenta Seeds have been issued new or amended experimental use permits (EUPs) from the EPA for modified (B.t.) corn seed. These trials may result in the corn lines being planted in Florida. (Federal Register, 1/24/07).
- The EPA has established dockets for the first pesticides to be reviewed under the Agency’s new Registration Review Program. Dockets for herbicides lactofen (Cobra®) and clomazone (Command®) as well as the miticide hexythiazox (Savey®/Hexygon®) are open for public comment until May 3, 2007. The Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 requires the EPA to review all pesticides every 15 years. EPA plans on opening 25 dockets this year, and 45 to 46 a year over the following three years. (EPA OPP Update, 2/2/07).
