  • wpdoc5.gifOn May 13, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) re-issued the Special Local Needs registration SLN FL-040005 to Gowan for Lorsban® insecticide (chlorpyrifos) use in tomato and pepper to control beet armyworm. The EPA registration number for the product is 62719- 301-10163. (FDACS letter of 5/13/05).
  • wpdoc6.gifOn May 6, the FDACS registered the protein harpin (Extend®) from Eden Bioscience Corp. to stimulate plant defense and control postharvest decay on fruiting vegetables, cucurbits, and other listed crops. The EPA registration number is 69834-5. (FDACS PREC Agenda, 6/9/05).
  • wpdoc7.gifOn May 6, the FDACS registered the protein harpin (Proact®) from Eden Bioscience Corp. to stimulate plant defense on legumes, cotton, forage crops, and other listed crops. The EPA registration number is 69834-5. (FDACS PREC Agenda, 6/9/05).
  • wpdoc8.gifSince the last day for legal use of the fungicide vinclozolin (Ronilan®) on snap beans and lettuce is November 30, the EPA has suggested also making that the day when tolerances are revoked. The Agency stated that “treated lettuce and succulent [snap] bean commodities that have been legally treated on or before November 30, 2005 and whose residues are within the tolerance set to expire on that date, will not be considered adulterated, even if they have not yet cleared channels of trade.” (Federal Register, 5/18/05).
  • wpdoc9.gifBased on a request by Loveland Products, Inc., the EPA has exempted from requirement of a tolerance the dodder management fungus Alternaria destruens strain 059 in or on all food crops when applied or used in accordance with label directions. (Federal Register, 5/18/05).
  • wpdoc10.gifOn May 27, the EPA announced a 30-day comment period on the request by Bayer, Makhteshim, Drexel, and Fuller to cancel products containing endosulfan (Phaser®/Thionex®) on snap bean, grape, spinach, and pecan. (Federal Register, 5/27/05).
  • wpdoc11.gifOn May 4, the EPA announced a 30-day comment period on the request by 14 dimethoate (Cygon®) registrants to cancel the product’s use on broccoli raab, cabbage, collard, grape, head lettuce, and spinach. (Federal Register, 5/4/05).
  • wpdoc12.gifThe FDACS has proposed a rule that would eliminate the requirement that as a condition of movement, all bee hives must meet a tolerance level of no more than two parasitic Varroa mites in an ether roll of 200 honeybees. Still listed as quarantinable pests are American foulbrood and the mite Troplaelaps clareae. (Florida Administrative Weekly, 5/6/05).

Urban/Non-Food

  • wpdoc13.gifOn May 9, the EPA changed the refuge requirements for Monsanto’s Bollgard and Bollgard II cotton. The change will allow insecticidal sprays on the five percent refuge, but only through the pre-squaring stage. This will allow growers to manage cabbage looper while not affecting cotton bollworm, tobacco budworm, or pink bollworm at this stage. (EPA Regulatory Update, 5/11/05).
  • The first step of the fenamiphos (Nemacur®) phaseout began in June, with the prohibition of application to hydrologic group A soils with a depth to water of less than 50 feet. Specifically, the prohibition states “After May 31, 2005, do not apply to hydrologic soil group A soils that are excessively drained and predominately sand or loamy sand such as soils in the suborder psamments with shallow water tables (less than 50 feet deep). These classifications and soil taxonomy refer to USDA definitions. If you are unsure of the type of soil you are treating, please consult with your county's extension agent or the product manufacturer. You can enter golf courses to see if they are possibly affected by this at: www.bayerprocentral.com under the insecticide product Nemacur®.
