Pesticide Registrations and Actions

Agricultural

  • wpdoc2.gifOn October 12, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) issued the Special Local Needs registration SLN FL-040009 to Syngenta for the use of Gramoxone® Max (paraquat) herbicide on strawberry plants after harvesting to control mites. (FDACS letter of 12/27/04).
  • wpdoc3.gifThree label revisions have been made on the Telone® products which currently have 24(c) registrations in the state of Florida (FL-990003, FL-990004, and FL- 990005). In addition to the removal of the statement concerning no treatment within 100 feet of drinking wells (because this statement is already on the national label), the SLN labels now reflects that chisel injection is not the only means of application. Additionally, the statement regarding training has been modified to state that the material is available only to people who have a restricted use pesticide license. (FDACS letter of 12/22/04).
  • wpdoc4.gifOn November 19, the FDACS registered the insecticide Safari® 20SG (dinotefuran) for foliar and systemic insect control in ornamental plants grown in greenhouses and outdoors. The EPA registration number for the Valent U.S.A. Corporation product is 33657-16- 59639. (FDACS PREC Agenda, 1/6/05)
  • wpdoc5.gifOn November 30, the FDACS registered the insecticide Aria® (flonicamid) for sucking pests in commercial greenhouses and interiorscapes. The EPA registration number for the FMC Corporation product is 279-3287. (FDACS PREC Agenda, 1/6/05).
  • wpdoc6.gifThe EPA plans to cancel the use of DiSyston® (disulfoton) 15G by June 13, 2005 for all uses except Frasier fir Christmas trees in North Carolina and coffee trees in Puerto Rico. Although DiSyston® 8E will still be available, pepper and peanut are not on the 8E label. Comments on this cancellation are being taken through June 13, 2005. Contact the Pesticide Info. Office (PIO) for more information. (Federal Register, 12/15/04).
  • wpdoc7.gifBased on a request by IR-4, tolerances are approved for the fungicide pyraclostrobin (Cabrio®). Tolerances of importance to Florida include brassicas, citrus, sweet corn, legume forage (except peanut and soybean), soybean, root and tuber vegetables, and edible-podded legumes. (Federal Register, 10/29/04).
  • wpdoc8.gifIt has come to the PIO’s notice that although Griffin’s Atrapa® ULV malathion is no longer available for bait application in citrus for Carribean fruit fly control, Cheminova has malathion in ULV form (96.5 percent) under the Fyfanon® brand. Its use for Carribean fruit fly in citrus is under the SLN registration FL-040004. Contact the PIO if you require a copy of the label.

Other Actions

  • wpdoc10.gifChontrol® paste (Chonodrostereum purpureum) is a new biological herbicide that has been registered for inhibiting spouting and regrowth in cut stumps of certain deciduous tree species in rights-of-way and forests. Applied to fresh cut stumps in summer or autumn, it prevents sprouting by colonizing and decaying the stump. (Wildland Weeds, Winter 2004).
  • wpdoc11.gifThe methyl bromide CUEs were signed in the final moments of 2004. In Florida for 2005, the fumigant may be used by growers of tomato, pepper (all varieties), strawberry, and eggplant, specified growers of flowers, trees, and turfgrass, as well as some golf courses. If you need methyl bromide, be prepared to deal with documentation and keep good records, as the penalties for misuse can be financially crippling. (FFVA Bulletin #68, 12/22/04).
