Other Actions

  • ole.gifAt the end of March, parties met to address the phase out of methyl bromide and the critical use exemptions (CUEs) submitted by countries all over the world. The outcome was that the U.S.A. was one of 11 countries given exemptions for 2005. The U.S.A. was alloted 19.7 million pounds of methyl bromide, out of 29.6 million pounds granted in total. The CUE requests were for 14 commodity areas: food processing, commodity storage, transplant trays, forest and orchard seedlings, orchard replant, turf and sod, tomato, pepper, eggplant, strawberry (field and nursery), cucurbits, ornamentals, ginger, and sweet potato. A notice in the Federal Register stated that the proposed rule on allocation will come out in mid 2004 and the final rule will come out in late 2004. In the same notice, a call for information for the 2006 and 2007 years is due to the EPA by August 8, 2004. (Pesticide & Toxic Chemical News, 4/5/04; Federal Register 5/7/04).
  • wpdoc13.gifIt has come to the attention of the Pesticide Information Office that some atrazine products (generally the concentrated liquids) have a statement not to apply the material after April 15th or before October 15th (six month period). The label also allows two applications. After consultation with the EPA and the registrant regarding the nature of these statements, it was determined that they largely relate to overseeding phytotoxicity. By limiting the second application to April 15th and the rate to one pound of active ingredient per acre, the potential for overseeding failure in the fall is reduced. The registrant believes the proper turf practice is one application in late winter and one in early spring (before April 15). (Syngenta email to EPA, 5/7/04).
  • The Pesticide Information Office is currently organizing an eggplant Strategic Pest Management Plan (PMSP) meeting for June 22nd at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center.  Please contact Mark Mossler if you would like to participate.
