Pesticide Registrations and Actions

  • wpdoc5.gifOn July 3, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service (FDACS) conditionally registered the termiticide Recruit® III (noviflumuron) for use as an above ground bait delivery system for the elimination of subterranean termite colonies. The EPA registration number for the Dow AgroSciences product is 62719-454. (FDACS PREC August Agenda)
  • wpdoc6.gifOn July 7, the FDACS registered the fungicide Omega® (fluazinam) for control of blight and mold on potatoes and peanuts. The EPA registration number for the ISK Biosciences product is 71512-1. (FDACS PREC August Agenda).
  • wpdoc7.gifOn July 10, the FDACS registered the harvest aid/defoliant ET® Herbicide/Defoliant (pyraflufen-ethyl) for terrestrial use on cotton, potato, field corn, soybean, and noncrop weed control. The EPA registration number for the Nichino America product is 71711-7. (FDACS PREC August Agenda).
  • wpdoc8.gifOn July 15, the FDACS issued a letter stating that the EPA had issued a specific exemption under the provisions of Section 18 of FIFRA, for the use of Topsin® fungicide (thiophanate-methyl) for control of white mold on fruiting vegetables (tomato, pepper, and eggplant). The exemption will expire on March 31, 2004. The products acceptable for use carry the EPA registration numbers 4581-408, 73545-8, or 4581-377. The material can only be applied by ground application at a rate of 0.7 lb ai/A (1 lb/A of product) and a maximum of four applications per crop may be made at 7 to 14 day intervals. The crop limit is 2.8 lb ai/A. The REI is 12 hours and PHI is 2 days. Up to 43,800 acres of tomato, 21,600 acres of pepper, and 1,600 acres of eggplant may be treated. (FDACS letter of 7/15/03).
  • wpdoc9.gifThe FDACS issued the Special Local Needs [24(c)] registration number FL- 030010 to DuPont Crop Protection for use of Escort® herbicide (metsulfuron methyl) to control old world climbing fern (Lygodium microphyllum) in natural areas. The EPA registration number for the product is 352-439. (FDACS email of 7/31/03).
  • wpdoc10.gifBased on issued Section 18's, a tolerance has been established for residues of the fungicide thiophanate-methyl (Topsin®) in or on fruiting vegetables - group 8 (0.5 ppm). The tolerance expires on 12/31/05. (Federal Register, 7/23/03).
  • wpdoc11.gifBased on residue chemistry, tolerances in meat, milk, poultry, and egg are being revoked for the insecticides aldicarb, carbofuran, diazinon, dimethoate, the herbicides atrazine, metolachlor, acifluorfen, the fungicides fenarimol, propiconazole, thiophanate-methyl, and the defoliant cacodylic acid because there are no reasonable expectations of finite residues in these commodities. Consequently, they are no longer needed. (Federal Register, 7/16/03).
  • wpdoc12.gifBased on request by BASF Corporation, tolerances have been established for residues of the fungicide boscalid in or on berries - group 13 (3.5 ppm), cucumber (0.20 ppm), grape (3.5 ppm), head lettuce (6.5 ppm), leaf lettuce (11.0 ppm), peanut (0.05 ppm), peanut oil/meal (0.15 ppm), mint (30 ppm), strawberry (1.2 ppm), brassica vegetables - subgroup 5A (3.0 ppm), brassica vegetable - subgroup 5B (18 ppm), bulb vegetables - group 3 (3.0 ppm), cucurbits except cucumber (1.6 ppm), fruiting vegetables - group 8 (1.2 ppm), legume vegetables - subgroups 6A/6B/6C (1.6/0.6/2.5 ppm), root vegetables - subgroup 1A (0.7 ppm), and tuberous and corm vegetables - subgroup 1C (0.05 ppm). (Federal Register, 7/30/03).
  • wpdoc13.gifBased on request by DuPont Crop Protection, tolerances have been established for residues of the fungicide famoxadone in or on potato (0.02 ppm), tomato (1.0 ppm), fruiting vegetables except tomato - group 8 (4.0 ppm), and cucurbit vegetables - group 9 (0.30 ppm). (Federal Register, 7/2/03).
  • wpdoc14.gifBased on request by IR-4, tolerances have been established for residues of the fungicide cymoxanil (Curzate®) in or on head lettuce (4.0 ppm), cucurbit vegetables - group 9 (0.05 ppm), and fruiting vegetables - group 8 (0.2 ppm). (Federal Register, 7/16/03).
  • wpdoc15.gifBased on request by Syngenta, tolerances have been established for residues of the insecticide/miticide emamectin benzoate (Denim®) in or on cotton gin byproduct (0.05 ppm), undelinted cotton seed (0.025 ppm), tomato paste (0.15 ppm), turnip greens (0.05 ppm), leafy brassica vegetables - group 5 (0.05 ppm), fruiting vegetable - group 8 (0.02 ppm), and leafy vegetable, except brassica - group 4 (0.1 ppm). (Federal Register, 7/9/03).
  • At a recent CARAT meeting, feedback was presented that indicated that there is some frustration in the research community concerning new registrations and experimental use permits. The USDA response to this was to let researchers know that they can query either the USDA (Al Jennings at 202 720-5375, or Therese Murtagh at 202 720-6998) or the regional pest management centers for this information. (USDA OPMP Newest News, 7/30/03).
  • wpdoc16.gifPotential changes to the federal label for the insecticide Monitor® (methamidophos) have been approved to include a crop maximum of four (4) applications. The material will also begin a phaseout period of between two and four years if the decision is approved by the EPA’s Office of Management and Budget. (FDACS email of 7/21/03).
  • wpdoc17.gifSePRO has purchased the worldwide rights of the plant growth regulator fluprimidol from Dow AgroSciences and will assume all rights, data, registrations, and trademarks associated with this compound. The company will be marketing it as TopFlor® (rather than Cutless®) for height control of ornamentals. (Ornamental Outlook, July 2003).
