Pesticide Registrations and Actions

  • On June 18, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) conditionally registered BASF’s plant growth regulator Pentia® (mepiquat pentaborate) for foliar application to cotton to assist in height reduction, open canopy, better early boll retention, possibly larger bolls, less boll rot, improved defoliation, and better harvest efficiency. The EPA registration number for the product is 7969-191. (FDACS PREC July Agenda).
  • On June 18, FDACS registered Bayer Environmental Science’s herbicide Revolver® (foramsulfuron) for postemergence control of annual and perennial grasses in Bermudagrass and zoysiagrass. The EPA registration number for the product is 432-1226. (FDACS PREC July Agenda).
  • On June 18, FDACS registered AgroFresh’s postharvest tool Smartfresh® (1-methylcyclopropene) for mitigating undesirable ethylene effects on harvested fruit. The EPA registration number for the product is 71297-2. (FDACS PREC July Agenda).
  • On June 18, FDACS registered AVA Chemical Ventures’ Sucrose Octanoate Biochemical Miticide (40%) for Varroa mite control on honeybees. The EPA registration number for the product is 70950-2. (FDACS PREC July Agenda).
  • On June 18, FDACS issued the Special Local Needs [24(c)] registration number FL-030009 to FMC Corporation for use of Stingray® aquatic herbicide (carfentrazone-ethyl) for control of aquatic weed species in Florida. The EPA registration number for the product is 279-3272. (FDACS PREC July Agenda).
  • On June 18, FDACS issued an Experimental Use Permit (EPA EUP # 241- EUP-129) to BASF for experimental use of Arsenal® (imazapyr) herbicide in nonfood aquatic areas of Florida. (FDACS PREC July Agenda).
  • wpdoc6.gifOn June 18, FDACS issued an Experimental Use Permit (EPA EUP # 70515-EUP-1) to Nutra-Park for experimental use of LPE Growth Regulator® (lysophosphatidylethanolamine) on fruit to extend shelf life when applied at an early stage of ripening. (FDACS PREC July Agenda).
  • wpdoc7.gifOn June 18, FDACS issued an Experimental Use Permit (EPA EUP # 100-EUP-112) to Syngenta for experimental use of Zyrox® (lufenuron) termiticide for use in integrated management systems for protection of structures from termites. (FDACS PREC July Agenda).
  • wpdoc8.gifOn June 18, FDACS issued an Experimental Use Permit (EPA EUP # 100-EUP- 113) to Syngenta for experimental use of Zyrox® Plus (lufenuron) termiticide for use in integrated management systems for protection of structures from termites. (FDACS PREC July Agenda).
  • wpdoc9.gifBased on work by IR-4, a tolerance has been established for residues of the insecticide imidacloprid in or on popcorn grain (0.05 ppm), popcorn stover (0.2 ppm), strawberry (0.5 ppm), acerola, avocado, canistel, feijoa, guava, jaboticaba, mango, okra, passionfruit, papaya, sapodilla, mamey/black sapote, star apple, starfruit (1.0 ppm), longan, lychee, persimmon, pulasan, rambutan (3.0 ppm), salal (3.5 ppm), and leaves of root and tuber vegetables (group 2) and legume vegetables except soybean (group 6), both at 4 ppm. These tolerances replace existing or time-limited tolerances already in some place for some of these crops. (Federal Register, 6/13/03).
  • wpdoc10.gifBased on work by IR-4, a tolerance has been established for residues of the insecticide buprofezin (Applaud®) on snap (succulent) bean (0.02 ppm), and on longan, lychee, pulasan, rambutan, and Spanish lime (0.3 ppm). (Federal Register, 6/25/03).
  • wpdoc11.gifBased on work by IR-4, a tolerance has been established for combined residues of the fungicide azoxystrobin on brassica, head and stem subgroup 5A (3.0 ppm), fresh herb, except chive, subgroup 19A (50 ppm), and dried herb, except chive, subgroup 19A (260 ppm). (Federal Register, 6/18/03).
  • wpdoc12.gifBased on a request by Bayer CropScience, tolerances have been established for residues of the herbicide flufenacet in or on field corn grain/stover/forage (0.05/0.4/0.4 ppm) and on soybean seed (0.1 ppm). (Federal Register, 6/25/03).
  • wpdoc13.gifThe EPA has extended the tolerances for certain Section 18 registrations. For Florida, the tolerances for fenbuconazole (Enable®) fungicide on grapefruit have been extended until December 31, 2005. The tolerance for pyriproxyfen (Knack®) insecticide on snap (succulent) bean has been extended until June 30, 2005. (Federal Register, 6/25/03).
  • wpdoc14.gifAlbaugh has requested the deletion of red potato off their 2,4-D LV4 herbicide label. This was one of the two 2,4-D formulations available for this use registered in Florida. The other product is Riverdale 2,4-D LV6 (EPA Reg. # 228-95). (Federal Register, 6/25/03).
  • wpdoc15.gifA California company has been issued an experimental use permit by the EPA which would allow 1.46 pounds of the California red scale pheromone to be applied on 4,050 acres of citrus as a mating disruptor. The EUP is effective from April 3 to September 30, and is authorized in only Arizona, California, Texas, Hawaii, and Florida. (Pesticide & Toxic Chemical News, 5/26/03).
  • wpdoc16.gifInterim guidance to help determine when a Clean Water Act permit is needed prior to aquatic application or aerial spraying of pesticides will supposedly be issued in mid-July. An attorney advising Representative John Duncan (R-TN) has said that the guidance may not resolve the problem of overlap between FIFRA and the Clean Water Act and that legislation may be needed, although it could not be confirmed whether Duncan was planning on putting forward such a bill. This comes after the U.S. Department of Justice sent a letter back to members of Congress informing them that DOJ would not be asking the Supreme Court to review the Forsgren decision. (Chemical Regulation Reporter, 6/23/03).
  • wpdoc17.gifOn June 25, the EPA ordered a stop to the sale of six unregistered pesticide products that two affiliated companies claim protect the public from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). EPA also requested a voluntary recall of these products from all locations within 30 days. The EPA orders were issued to: Phillips Technologies, LLC of Millersville, MD, for the illegal sale of the SARS Mask Set, SARS Travel Kit, Silver SARS Mask, Phillips Silver Mask, SARS Electrostatic Mask and Silver Spray; and to SARS Research Labs of Tampa, FL for the same six products. All of these products claimed to kill pathogens, viruses - including the SARS virus - bacteria, and fungi. The order goes into effect immediately upon receipt by the company. EPA has an extensive pre-market registration process to ensure that pesticide products that claim to protect public health are effective. (EPA Press Advisory, 6/27/03).
