March 2003

Pesticide Registrations and Actions

  • On February 12, the EPA published a rule that revokes all tolerances for residues of the insecticide methoprene and replaces this action with a tolerance exemption. (Federal Register, 2/12/03).
  • On February 6, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) sent a letter to Syngenta Crop Protection, Inc. to inform them that the Department had accepted the Section 24(c) application for the use of Actigard® (acibenzolar-s-methyl) fungicide (EPA Reg. # 100-922) on tobacco seedlings grown in seed beds or plant/float houses. Users must sign a waiver from the Flue Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation. The Special Local Needs (SLN) number is FL-030003. (FDACS letter of 2/6/03).
  • On February 3, FDACS sent a letter to Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association to inform them that the EPA had granted a specific exemption for the use of Topsin M® (thiophanate-methyl) fungicide (EPA Reg. # 4581-408, 4581-377, or 73545-8) for control of post- bloom fruit drop on citrus. The exemption went into effect on 2/22/03 and expires one year later. Product may be applied by ground or aerial application at a rate of 1.5 to 2 pounds of formulated product per acre. A maximum of two applications may be made, with the second application made seven to 14 days after the first. Do not exceed a total of 4 pounds of product per acre per year. The REI is 48 hours. (FDACS letter of 2/3/03).
  • On February 13, FDACS sent a letter to Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association to inform them that the EPA had granted a specific exemption for the use of Enable® (fenbuconazole) fungicide (EPA Reg. # 62719-416) for control of greasy spot on grapefruit. The exemption went into effect on 2/4/03 and expires on 10/1/03. Product may only be ground applied, at a rate of eight ounces per acre. A maximum of three applications may be made, no sooner than 21 days apart. The REI is 12 hours and the PHI is 48 hours. A 75-foot buffer must be maintained around streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, or reservoirs. (FDACS letter of 2/13/03).
  • On February 13, FDACS sent a letter to Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association to inform them that the EPA had granted a specific exemption for the use of Knack® (pyriproxyfen) insecticide (EPA Reg. # 59639-95) for control of silverleaf whitefly on legume vegetables (except soybean). The exemption went into effect on 2/7/03 and expires one year later. Product may applied by ground or aerial application, at a rate of eight to ten ounces per acre. A maximum of two applications may be made, no sooner than 14 days apart. Do not exceed 20 ounces per acre per season. The REI is 12 hours and the PHI is 7 days. A 60-foot buffer (ground application) or 300-foot buffer (aerial application) must be maintained around caverns, sinkholes, and surface waters within the defined recharge area for the Squirrel Chimney Cave Shrimp in Alachua County. (FDACS letter of 2/13/03).
  • The Interim Risk Management Decision (IRED) for the organophosphate pesticide dicrotophos (Bidrin®) is now available, according to a Federal Register notice published on February 5. Dicrotophos is primarily used on cotton and is eligible for reregistration with certain changes, including a reduction in the total application rate, a prohibition of aerial applications, and a production cap to reduce risks to workers and the environment. The IRED states that dicrotophos fits into its own risk cup, i.e., its individual, aggregate risks from food and drinking water are within acceptable levels. (EPA OPP Update, 2/12/03).
  • Based on work by IR-4, the EPA has established tolerances for the fungicide cyprodinil (Vangard®) on the bushberry group (3 ppm), the caneberry group (10 ppm), pistachio (0.1 ppm), juneberry/lingonberry/salal (3 ppm), and watercress (20 ppm). (Federal Register, 2/5/03).
  • On February 5, the EPA published a list of pesticide registrations for which cancellation was requested. Registrations on the list which may affect Florida users include Bayer CropScience’s Mocap® (ethoprop) 10G insecticide (EPA Reg. # 264-465), a 24(c) label (FL-850001) for wireworms in sugarcane for Mocap® 10G, and Griffin’s Boa® (paraquat) herbicide (EPA Reg. # 1812-420). (Federal Register, 2/5/03).
  • The EPA has granted a conditional registration to GlycoGenesys for the pesticide product BAITS MOTEL - Stay Awhile, Rest Forever™ (EPA Reg. # 70464-4) for indoor bait use. The product contains 10% Beauveria bassiana, which is an entomopathogenic fungus that can kill roaches and fire ants. (Federal Register, 2/22/03).
  • DuPont has obtained a supplemental label [2(EE)] for use of Sinbar® (terbacil) herbicide for weed control in annual strawberry production systems under plastic mulch. The label only allows alfalfa, apple, blueberry, mint, peach, or strawberry to be planted within the 12 months after the application, and there is a 110-day PHI. (CDMS labels).
